This trigger activates immediately when someone creates a product in your Shopify admin, through bulk imports, or via connected apps. The step captures all the new product's basic information including its unique ID, title, and other standard product data. No configuration is required since MESA automatically connects to your Shopify store. The product data gets passed to the next step so the workflow knows which specific product needs to be processed.

Retrieve Product Metafield

Why this matters: This step fetches the specific custom data stored in your product's metafield that will become the new tag, ensuring the workflow has the exact value to apply.

You need to specify which metafield contains the value you want to use as a tag by providing the metafield's namespace and key. The step automatically uses "custom" as the namespace (the standard location for manually created metafields), but you'll need to enter the exact key name of your metafield. To find this key, go to Settings > Custom Data in your Shopify admin, view your product metafields, and copy the key of the specific metafield you want to use. The retrieved metafield value then gets passed to the final tagging step.

This step automatically takes the metafield value retrieved from the previous step and adds it as a tag to the same product that triggered the workflow. No additional configuration is needed since the step uses the product ID from the trigger and the metafield value from the retrieval step. Once complete, the new tag will appear in the product's tag list in your Shopify admin, and you can use it for filtering, collections, or any other tag-based functionality. The workflow finishes after successfully adding the tag.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the metafield key I specified doesn't exist on a product?

The workflow will skip the tagging step for that product since there's no value to retrieve. The product will still be created normally, but won't receive any additional tags from this workflow.

Can I use metafields from different namespaces besides "custom"?

Yes, you can modify the namespace field in Step 2 to target metafields created by apps or other systems. Common examples include "app" namespaces or custom namespaces created by developers.

Will this workflow tag existing products if I edit them?

No, this workflow only triggers when completely new products are created. If you want to tag existing products when they're updated, you'd need a separate workflow that triggers on "Product Updated" events.
